Siquijor Beaches — An Honest Guide to the Best Sand on the Island
Siquijor isn't Boracay — the beaches are quieter, less developed, and better for it. But not all of them are worth the trek. Here's which beaches to prioritise and which to skip.
Paliton Beach: golden sunset views, calm waves, best for sundown. Salagdoong Beach: cliff jumps, snorkeling, entrance fee. San Juan Beach: budget-friendly, family-accessible. Paliton for photos, Salagdoong for adventure. Skip crowded Sibulan — it's overrated.
Paliton Beach: Sunset Specialist
Paliton is famous for one thing: sunsets. The beach faces west, and the sun dips into the sea with brilliant orange-pink colors around 6–6:30 PM. The sand is soft golden, lined with coconut palms, and it's uncrowded even during peak season.
The Honest Reality
Swimming: Not recommended. The waves are gentle but the water is murky (sediment from Dumaguete's shipping traffic affects water clarity). You can wade, but don't expect crystal-clear snorkeling.
Best for: Photography, sunset walks, picnics, yoga at sunrise, quiet reflection. Bring a camera.
Logistics
- Location: Bauan, northwest Siquijor
- Entrance fee: ₱20 per person
- Parking: ₱50 for motorbikes
- Facilities: Small warung, basic toilets
- Best time: 5:30–7:00 PM for sunset
Arrive 30 minutes before sunset. Get photos of the orange sky, then stay for the "blue hour" (post-sunset) when the light turns indigo-blue — equally beautiful and less crowded with photographers.
Salagdoong Beach: Adventure & Snorkeling
This is the action beach. Salagdoong has three cliff-jumping platforms (5m, 8m, 10m), a living reef 20 meters offshore, and calm turquoise water. It's privately managed by Salagdoong Beach Resort, so there's a fee, but facilities are well-maintained.
What You Get
- Cliff jumping: Three platforms at varying heights. Beginner-friendly to adrenaline-pumping
- Snorkeling: Colorful reef with sea turtles (occasionally), pufferfish, angelfish, parrotfish. Water depth: 2–8 meters
- Swimming: Deep, calm pools perfect for all levels. Water clarity is excellent
- Beach facilities: Showers, changing rooms, restaurant, lounge chairs
Costs & Hours
- Entrance: ₱50 per person
- Parking: ₱20 for motorbikes
- Snorkel rental: ₱100 (mask + fins)
- Lounge chair: ₱100
- Hours: Sunrise–sunset (roughly 6 AM–6 PM)
Best Time to Visit
Early morning (7–9 AM): Calmest water, clearest visibility, minimal crowds. Reef fish are active. Best for snorkeling.
Late afternoon (3–5 PM): Good light for photography, warmer air, fewer crowds than midday. Water still warm and clear.
Avoid midday (10 AM–2 PM): Heat is intense, water reflection makes snorkeling difficult, tour groups arrive.
Snorkeling Reality Check
The reef is healthy but not pristine. You'll see colorful fish and healthy coral, but expect some dead coral patches and occasional trash (ongoing conservation issue). It's still worth snorkeling, especially if you've never done reef snorkeling before. Sea turtles are spotted occasionally but not guaranteed.
Don't touch the coral or stand on it. Don't feed fish (though locals sometimes do). Wear reef-safe sunscreen only. The reef is protected; respect it and help keep it healthy.
San Juan Beach: Budget & Family-Friendly
San Juan is the main tourist area and has the central beach. It's not pristine, but it's accessible, affordable, and has the best infrastructure (hotels, restaurants, motorbike rentals nearby).
The Honest Reality
Beach quality: Sandy, but not white — more tan/brownish. Water is calm and good for swimming, but clarity is average (local fishing activity). It's more of a "town beach" than a resort beach.
Best for: Budget travelers, families with small children (shallow, calm water), easy beach access without renting transport, sunset walks. Not for photographers seeking pristine-beach shots.
What's There
- Entrance fee: None (it's the main town beach)
- Facilities: Multiple restaurants, bars, beach massage services (₱300–500/hour), vendors selling snacks
- Swimming: Safe, calm, suitable for kids. Water depth gradual
- Sunset: Decent, but not as dramatic as Paliton
Nearby Options
The beach areas near San Juan (Cangagsang area, central waterfront) all merge into one accessible zone. You can walk between them or rent a tricycle for short hops.
Beach Comparison Table
| Beach | Best For | Entrance Fee | Water Quality | Facilities |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paliton | Sunsets, photos | ₱20 | Fair (murky) | Basic |
| Salagdoong | Snorkeling, cliff jump | ₱50 | Excellent | Full resort |
| San Juan | Budget, families | Free | Good | Excellent |
Hidden Coves Worth Exploring
Indanan Beach (South)
Small, quiet, white sand. Good for swimming. Less touristy than the main beaches. Accessible by motorbike but requires local knowledge — ask at your hotel.
Calinog Beach (Southeast)
Rocky, shallow, good for snorkeling among rocks. Not ideal for swimming but great for exploring tide pools.
Rent a motorbike and do a full-island lap (35 km, 2–3 hours). You'll find small coves and viewpoints most tourists miss. Stop whenever the view looks good.
Beach Etiquette & Practicalities
What to Bring
- Reef-safe sunscreen (SPF 30+)
- Water shoes (for rocky sections)
- Towel or sarong
- Cash (for entrance fees, snacks, massages)
- Hat or visor (sun is intense in the tropics)
Safety
Beaches are safe. Theft is rare but not impossible. Don't leave valuables unattended on the beach. Use a waterproof pouch for phone/wallet or leave them locked in your motorbike.
Currents can be strong during monsoon season (June–September) — ask locals before swimming unfamiliar beaches.
Day Trip Idea
Combine Salagdoong in the morning (snorkeling, cliff jump) with Paliton in the evening (sunset). Both are on the west side, roughly 30 minutes apart by motorbike. Pack a picnic lunch or eat at Salagdoong Resort's restaurant.
Next Steps
Combine beaches with Cambugahay Falls or Balete Tree for a full-day adventure. Or build a beach-focused itinerary.
